Cross-Culture Program Piloted in Vanuatu
Bridging Cultures Through Faith
Vanuatu, October 21, 2024
The South Pacific Division's first cross-culture initiative is underway in Vanuatu, fostering a unique exchange of ministry and cultural learning between New Zealand and Vanuatu. Pastor Sarah Jane from New Zealand was warmly welcomed by Vanuatu Mission leaders on Monday, October 21, with the traditional local dish, Laplap Sosor. This welcome ceremony set the tone for the two-week program, where Pastor Sarah worked alongside Pastor Macsel James of Vanuatu to experience firsthand how the Adventist community in Vanuatu shares the message of Jesus.
The initiative is designed to deepen cultural understanding and strengthen ministry skills through a mutual exchange of practices and experiences. Throughout her time in Vanuatu, Pastor Sarah engaged in community gatherings, listened to local testimonies, and learned how the Adventist faith is practiced in the Pacific Island context.
Reflecting on her experience, Pastor Sarah shared, “I have truly experienced community and how people in Vanuatu are open and friendly to receive the gospel of Jesus compared to other secular countries where sharing Jesus can be challenging.”
Farewell and Looking Forward
As her time in Vanuatu draws to a close, Pastor Sarah is being honored with a traditional Vanuatu island dress to mark the conclusion of this enriching program. This symbolic farewell represents the deep connections formed and the shared learning that will continue to impact her ministry back in New Zealand.
Next Steps:
Following this successful pilot, Pastor Macsel James will soon travel to New Zealand to experience how Adventists witness in a different cultural setting. This next phase aims to broaden his perspective on ministry approaches in a more secular environment, ultimately creating a bridge between the two countries and enhancing their capacity to witness for Jesus in diverse cultural landscapes.
