Fiji Faces Alarming Diabetes Statistics; Fiji Deputy Prime Minister Launches National Awareness Week

DEUBA, Fiji – On the 30th of October, Deputy Prime Minister Honorable Biman Prasad highlighted the alarming rate of diabetes-related deaths in Fiji during the launch of National Diabetes Awareness Week at the Adventist Camp Site in Deuba. "In Fiji, diabetes alone causes one-fourth of deaths which is very significant and is about 1,500 per year - the highest rate in the world. This is very alarming!" he revealed.

The event, marked the opening of a series of weeklong celebrations and educational activities leading up to World Diabetes Day on November 14. These events are organized by Diabetes Fiji Inc. in partnership with Hope Clinic and in collaboration with the Ministry of Health & Medical Services - Fiji.

The Deputy Prime Minister expressed deep concern over the public's perception and handling of diabetes, stating, "What is more alarming is that we seem to be neglecting that diabetes, like all other NCDs, is controllable, it can be managed and it is within our ability to choose a healthy lifestyle."

His comments underscore the urgent need for increased education and lifestyle changes in the face of this national health crisis. The full extent of the Deputy Prime Minister's concerns and call to action can be seen in his speech, which is available for viewing online. https://fb.watch/n-9s6oLDxd/?mibextid=cr9u03

The weeklong health-focused expo aims to educate the public on diabetes management and prevention. It is part of the broader Live More Abundantly (LMA) program supported by ADRA Australia, which is operated by the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) Fiji. The LMA program is dedicated to minimizing and mitigating the risks of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in Fiji.

During the week, medical professionals from the Granite Adventist Church in Sacramento joined local volunteers to provide free medical services to the community. Several minor surgeries, which could have otherwise cost hundreds of dollars, were performed at no charge, offering relief and support to Fijian families in need.

The collaboration among health organizations, the government, and international partners such as ADRA Australia reflects a strong commitment to addressing the diabetes epidemic. Through education, prevention strategies, and community support, these organizations are working tirelessly to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve the health outcomes of the Fijian population.

As National Diabetes Awareness Week unfolds, the focus is on empowering individuals with the knowledge and resources to make informed health choices. With the rates of diabetes at a critical level, the message from health authorities and the Deputy Prime Minister is clear: it is imperative to take immediate and decisive action to combat this life-threatening disease.
