Former Vanuatu Mission President Pastor Bill Townend and Group of Retired Pastors Visit Vanuatu Mission Headquarters

On November 8, 2024, the Vanuatu Mission headquarters welcomed a special visit from former President Pastor Bill Townend, his wife Robina, and a group of retired pastors and their wives. The group arrived on a cruise ship, returning to the place where Pastor Townend and his wife served the people of Vanuatu with dedication and resilience from 1979 to 1980.

Pastor Townend, now 79, led the mission during a time of significant political upheaval, when Vanuatu was experiencing rebellion and civil unrest. Amid these challenging conditions, he and his team were compelled to relocate the mission headquarters from Luganville to Port Vila, marking a historic shift. This move ensured the safety of the mission’s work and established Port Vila as the longstanding center of operations for the Vanuatu Mission—a legacy that continues to impact the church’s work today.

In addition to revisiting the mission office, Pastor Townend and the group visited Vila SDA Primary School, a meaningful stop on the journey. Addressing the students, he proudly shared that he was instrumental in building the school during his tenure. His words left a strong impression on the young listeners, who gained a glimpse into the foundations of their educational environment and the legacy of service that supports their school.

The visit serves as a touching reminder of the enduring bonds between Vanuatu’s communities and those who have devoted their lives to its growth and spiritual enrichment. Pastor Townend’s return stands as a testament to his deep connection to the mission’s journey and to the foundation he laid, which continues to inspire leaders and young students in the faith community.

As the group of retired pastors and their wives depart, their visit leaves a profound sense of gratitude and celebration of the legacy they established—a reminder of the enduring dedication and love that Pastor Townend and his generation of leaders have instilled in Vanuatu.
