Marching for Health in the "Sugar City” Lautoka, Fiji

On May 17, 2024, the 10,000 Toes Campaign in Fiji organized a march in Lautoka, coinciding with the visit of the World President of the SDA Church, Elder Ted Wilson, and his wife Nancy Wilson. The event drew a significant crowd, beginning at Shirley Park, proceeding through the main town streets, and returning to Shirley Park. The purpose of the march was to raise awareness about the 10,000 Toes Campaign, which aims to prevent, control, arrest, and reverse diabetes through lifestyle interventions and early health screenings.

Four health screening points were set up at various locations in Lautoka. SDA church members from the Western, Central, Eastern, and Northern regions gathered at Shirley Park. The Fiji Police Brass Band led the march, accompanied by campaign supporters who displayed messages of hope, emphasizing the fight against non-communicable diseases (NCDs), crime, and other social issues.

After the march, participants reconvened at Shirley Park for speeches from various government stakeholders based in Lautoka. Topics included the dangers of narcotic drugs, unemployment, idleness, street violence, starting businesses, reproductive health, NCDs, and general societal issues. A 10,000 Toes health screening point at the park offered health checks and free consultations. Participants proudly wore their campaign attire, with the 10,000 Toes team in black t-shirts branded with "Get involved."

The event successfully conveyed its message that early detection can help prevent the increasing number of deaths caused by diabetes.
