Called to Obey: Nita Baseresere’s Journey of Faith in Indonesia

Surakarta, West Indonesia. For Nita Baseresere, a missionary from Fiji, the call to serve in Indonesia wasn’t just a change in location, it was a leap of faith. Leaving the familiarity of home, family, and comfort, she arrived in Surakarta with a heart full of obedience and a suitcase of courage.

“Coming to Indonesia as a missionary has been a journey of faith, obedience, and deep trust,” she shares. But the journey wasn’t easy.

Everything felt small, her room, her resources, even her strength. Sharing a compact space with her partner, Nita had to begin again from scratch. Buying a phone, an iron, basic kitchen tools, and food. She recalls walking to school under the heat, with aching feet and tired hearts. It was in those quiet, difficult moments that the temptation to compare crept in.

“Other missionary friends seemed to have it easier,” she says. “Better accommodations, smoother paths, more visible support. I found myself wondering why my calling felt so difficult, so humble in appearance.”

But amid those questions, God reminded her of a deeper truth: True mission is not about comfort. It’s about obedience.

“That’s where trust is built, deep, raw trust,” Nita says. That trust was put to the test just this week. After spending the last of her money, she could only afford noodles, cucumbers, and bread. The next morning, with almost nothing left to eat, she turned to God in prayer.

And God answered. “Without spending a single cent, I was given three full, delicious meals that day. All freely provided,” Nita recalls, her voice full of wonder.

The experience reminded her of the story of the widow of Zarephath in 1 Kings 17—the woman who gave her last meal to the prophet Elijah and saw her flour and oil miraculously replenished.

“God multiplied what I could not. He reminded me that He sees me and that He cares,” she says.

In the face of struggle, Nita has discovered that God’s provision often doesn’t come in abundance, it comes in just enough. Enough to get through the day. Enough to build trust. Enough to know He is near.

“This is the life of true mission,” she says. “Surrendering the urge to compare and choosing to trust. That’s where miracles are found, in the mundane. Because when we obey God fully, we discover a powerful truth: GOD NEVER FAILS.
